Lignumvitae & Indian Key near Islamorada

Lignumvitae: Uninhabited retreat of rare trees
and lush vegetation on a virgin hardwood
hammock (rare in the Keys). Walking trail
and restored 1919 Matheson House (below)
In 1919 William J. Matheson, a wealthy Miami
chemist, Purchased the isolated location, built
a caretaker's home with a windmill for electricity
and a cistern for rainwater. Today, the house
is the visitor center for this island forest.
